LPE Survey: Preferences, priorities, and choices: What parents think about education and the future of their children

In Brazil, parents of low socioeconomic status are considered incapable of making educational choices due to their limited access to formal schooling. Consequently, they are neglected in the decision-making process regarding their children's education. This is one of the main "arguments" against school choice systems.

On one hand, the public education system holds a monopoly on state education resources, leaving socioeconomically vulnerable parents with little or no choice but low-quality state schools. On the other hand, the state prohibits families from replacing official schooling with alternative models, even if funded with private resources.

“If the public school system is doing such a splendid job, why does it needs to fear competition from nongovernmental, competitive schools or, if it isn't, why should anyone object to its "destruction."?"
